The Metal Building Manufacturer’s Association10

The Metal Building Manufacturer’s Association, or MBMA, has become a very important organization in solidifying and promoting the metal building industry. This group began in the United States in 1956 with thirteen charter members and continues its vigorous work to the present day. The goals of this group have been, and continue to be, making sure that there is industry agreement on insurance and safety regulations, code applications, and design guidelines.
At the beginning of the 21st century the MBMA has close to thirty metal building manufacturers as a core membership which represents close to 10,000 builders nationwide. The vast majority of metal building systems that are erected nationwide have been the result of group member efforts. Industry suppliers have recently been granted membership in order to strengthen information and program offerings.
The MBMA has a vested interest in providing engineering improvements and guidelines to manufacturers. Before formation of the association each manufacturer could set its own design guidelines. This resulted in huge quality and reliability gaps within the industry. The integrity of today’s metal buildings are due, in large part, to MBMA design guidelines.
Another advancement that came about because of the MBMA’s involvement was that of proper metal building wind loading through wind tunnel research in the 1970’s. This research is now used worldwide as accepted coding in metal building construction. The MBMA continues wind force studies through laboratories and universities. Snow loading, thermal studies, and fire rating testing have also been sponsored and encouraged by the association’s activities.
There are many important publications that have been produced by the MBMA that include what the standards are for proper metal roofing design, an annual industry market review, and numerous videos, presentations, and promotional materials that promote the features, advantages, and benefits of metal buildings. The MBMA has also produced a manual for over 45 years that is an invaluable guideline tool for everyone involved in the industry. This book is essential in relation to the aspects of proper design, correct building loads, and other essential industry practices and applications.
Thee MBMA has been deeply involved with certification programs for metal building manufacturers. One of the most recent of these programs seeks to not only ensure a premium quality metal building product is achieved through the production process but also to underscore proper design and quality guidelines once the building is finalized. The certification of the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) is required by the MBMA for membership in its organization.
The Metal Building Manufacturer’s Association is located in Ohio and continues to be the most important and influential metal building organization in the United States.
